School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that though there was a marginal decrease in the overall pass percentage, it was heartening to see toppers and high scorers coming from all over the State, particularly the rural areas.

"We have toppers from places like Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, which were earlier perceived as educationally backward districts. Students of the subsequent batches in these districts will now be motivated to perform well like their seniors. The Department has been focussing on the educationally backward districts and the results are very encouraging."

There has been a sharp increase in the number of centums this year, particularly in Mathematics. The number of centums in individual subjects for the past five years:
Subject 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
Mathematics 1433 2611 855 1568 3852 4060
Physics 625 1131 17 217 282 245
Chemistry 744 1677 119 145 306 467
Biology 655 1227 81 129 153 218
Pointing to the increase in the number of centums in many subjects and the emergence of subject toppers from small towns and villages, Mr.Thennarasu said: "The most important thing this year is that the top scores are distributed across districts and have not come just from urban schools."

Students could obtain their mark sheets from their schools on May 25. Private candidates could collect their mark sheets at their examination centres, officials said.

Students who wish to apply for photocopies of their answer sheets may collect the application forms at the offices of the CEOs, DEOs and the Regional Deputy Director of Government Examinations. The Special Supplementary Examinations will be held between June 22 and July 2. For details, visit: www.dge.tn.gov.in.
